Extracurricular Activities

Students are encouraged to become active members of campus life. There are many student organizations which IEP students are welcome to join. Also, the University sponsors many activities such as plays, films, musical recitals, parties, and much more. You can find out about these activities at the Information Desk of the Student Union.

The Office of International Affairs sponsors an International Coffee Hour every Friday afternoon during the regular semesters, except during the summer. Everyone is invited: internationals and Americans alike. There are food and drinks, games to play, and door prizes each week. Also, the Office of International Affairs organizes day and weekend trips to areas of interest such as New Orleans, Houston, and Atlanta.

The Office of International Affairs also coordinates two programs for international students:
  • International Friendship Program:
Students are matched with American families and spend time as guests in American homes. Although you will not live with the family, you will be able to spend time with them, build friendships, and create memories of your experiences in the United States.
  • Global Education Program:
Students can volunteer to speak at schools or clubs in the Lafayette area about their cultures. The goal of the program is to promote a better understanding between the international students and the local community. It gives the students an opportunity to share their cultures while interacting with Americans of different ages.
The IEP also organizes many after-school events. Every week, the IEP has a Conversation Hour where we discuss topics. Everyone is invited to attend.

In addition, special activities are arranged each session such as potluck dinners, holiday parties and activities, and trips to interesting places near Lafayette. In the past year, we have taken trips to the Tabasco factory and Avery Island, the state capitol building in Baton Rouge, the Zoo of Acadiana, and Jefferson Island. We have also taken students on swamp tours in the Atchafalaya Basin and canoeing at Lake Fausse Point State Park.
