International Friendship Program

International students with american familiesThe International Friendship Program, sponsored by the UL Lafayette Office of International Affairs, provides international students with an opportunity to get an "inside view" of American culture. With the International Friendship Program we "match" an international student with an American family, couple, or individual who is interested in establishing a friendship with an international student. These families reflect the diversity of the city's population.

The American families invite international students to their homes for special holidays, family celebrations, or just for friendly, informal visits. Through this program, friendships are formed as you learn more about each other's way of life, food, music, art, culture, and tradition, etc.

What you can share with your friendship family?

Your friendship family may be interested in learning about your country. You can:
  • Share photographs and slides from home.
  • Explain your national holidays.
  • Show or give maps or postcards from your country.
  • Discuss events that are happening in your country.
  • Cook a favorite typical meal from home.
  • Invite your friendship family to attend a cultural event you and others from your country have organized, or an event sponsored by the Office of International Affairs.

How can you join?

There are applications can either be downloaded below or may be picked up in the Office of International Affairs. After you fill them out, please return them to the International Friendship Coordinator. The coordinator will then plan for the initial meeting between student and the American family.
